The sudden shift in gas prices has severely impacted household energy bills up and down the country – we’ve all felt the impact of the change.
This leaves people with two questions – why did this happen, and what’s going to happen in 2022?
In this article, we’ll run through the reasons why gas prices skyrocketed and discuss why it’s difficult to predict what’s going to happen this year.
According to the Heat Trust, the independent, non-profit consumer champion for heat networks, last year the industry saw commercial gas prices increase by 1,000% rising from 1.5 per unit to 15p per unit before Christmas, with the price currently hovering between 6p and 7pm per unit. Heat Trust is campaigning for heat network operators to be allowed to purchase gas at capped domestic tariff rates and pass on these savings to flat dwellers which should help to keep the hiking prices at bay. Consumers and landlords operating heat networks are already reporting examples of price rises of up to 700% - the equivalent of the price of milk rising to £3.85.
